To date, to the best of my knowledge, there is still no clinical link between deodorant and breast cancer. All the same, I decided to be as kind to my body as possible, especially seeing as I’ve had tumours under both arms.
When I calmed down and thought about it logically, I knew I’d rarely used the really harsh chemical spray ones. Bar a short spell as a teenager when I favoured the trendy ones that smell like a whore’s handbag, I’ve always been pretty careful about the products I’ve used on my body.
All the same, my cancer diagnosis sent me off in a tailspin looking for products that were pure as the driven snow.
Well, there’s no such thing but seeing as I’ve survived ten years since my initial diagnosis, I’m guessing I’m not going to die by using deodorant!
I’ve tried so many over the years I could open a deodorant stall. Many of them are herbal based. This means they smell like stuffing. Lovely on a Sunday with roast chicken, but it’s not a scent I like wafting up at me regularly. Some of them even seemed to make me sweat more.
I’ve boiled it down to two that I find both effective and kind to my body. They don’t contain parabens, aluminium or alcohol.
Boinsen pictured below on the left is available in Tesco or Boots or local pharmacies and costs €2.99/£2.35. It’s the most like “normal” roll on deodorants with a pleasant smell and it works reasonably well. They also do a spray and stick version of this but I’ve never tried them. The second is by Jason and it’s a stick formula. This is between €5/€7.00 depending on where you buy it and available in some pharmacies (I got mine in my local one) or from health food shops or www.eu.iherb.com
Both smell pleasant and aren’t a bit like stuffing, mercifully.
If you’re suffering with sweats from chemotherapy or from being thrust into menopause nothing is going to stop that sadly. During those horrible days all I can recommend is regular showers, loose cotton tops and plenty of liquids. There are days that I’ll have four showers! What ever gets you through right?
I’m sure many of you have your own personal favourites for deodorants but if you’re at the point where you’re simply freaked out and need a suggestion maybe you’ll like one of these two.
Happy sweating, I'm right there with you!
